The history of the Central park Simón Bolívar goes back to the year of 1.968 when in areas of the current scene an open-air mass was celebrated, as part of the visit of the dad Paul VI to Colombia. The mayors' visionary management like Jorge Gaitán Cortés and Virgil Barco Vargas, allowed to separate near 400 hectares as green and recreative long-term spaces (including the current ones The Boyfriends, Saltpeter, Museum of the Children, Sports Unit and Coldeportes Nacional's building, between others), thanks to which Bogota possesses today a beautiful and wide Metropolitan park baptized with the name of The Liberator. On the occasion of the arrival of the Supreme Pontiff to Bogota in the year 68 it was constructed named Moderate You Eucharistically, which survives at present as part of the geographyOf the scene, witness of the important event and point of reference to the adequacy of other works. Juridically the park was born according to Law 31 of 1.979 to commemorate 200 years of the birth of Bolivar to be celebrating 4 years later, with what it was left a prudential time for the construction of the new park. The first stage of the same one submitted on July 22 of 1.983 with the culmination of the ceremonial square as it is known nowadays (today Plaza of Events), with capacity for 80 thousand spectators and the sowing of 3.300 trees and artificial lighting. Another decisive year in the configuration of the Central Simón Bolívar was of 1.986 with the arrival to the country of the dad Juan Paul II, so in the style of his predecessor, celebrated another gigantic liturgical act to sky opened in the facilities of the park.
From 1996 program has been designed social to convert the park into a center for public events as the Summer festival and Rock to the Park, turning this way into the axis of the sports and recreative activities of the city.
The Park Simón Bolívar has received thousands of fans of the music, the sport, the theatre and Sundays in family for more than 20 years, thanks to his extensive area. It has three zones of games, a lake and a pier with boats and oars, a ciclopaseo of 3.560 meters, ciclovía of 4 kilometres about the park, square of events, track of trot, an island to sight birds, modules of show restraint and a terrace viewing-point, between others. There are six income and 16 kilometres to walk. There festivals have been realized, lunadas and concerts.
